white dress in a cemetary … and kristen’s visit, pt 2

a white, swiss dot, summer dress in an old hollywood cemetery hardly seems appropriate, but neither does projecting ferris bueller’s day off on a mausoleum, so whatevs.

the white dress weekend continues.

today michael and i are meeting our friend blair and her friend jose, and maybe emily too at the hollywood forever cemetery for an outdoor showing of ferris bueller’s day off. it’s part of the cinespia summer movie series and it’s wonderful.

so while we’re on the subject, this is also part two of the recap of kristen’s visit to la where we coincidentally went to just such an event.

on kristen’s weekend the film was singin’ in the rain. none of us had ever seen it, except for kristen, but we made her watch it again. and i guarantee she’d never seen in while sitting in a cemetery on a summer’s night with blankets and pillows and a yummy spread. so, i don’t feel bad.

the movie was wonderful and even anti-musical-film-michael enjoyed the whole thing. in fact, michael loved cinespia so much he started to think maybe we should live in LA forever after all. in two years i had never heard those words form him. it was a big deal. really one of the best, best things about summertime in los angeles.

(and no, we won’t really be living in LA forever. don’t worry…)

so what makes cinespia so great?
well first you wait and wait and line (not so great, but not so bad either), then you “donate” $10 to the cemetery (quotations required because the “donation” is involuntary) – again not so great, but not so bad either. and then the rest really is great!

you walk though the cemetery which is like no cemetery i’ve ever seen. its old and new smashed together with wonderfully tacky tombstones, lots with etchings and carvings and full out busts of those that lie below, and nothing seems organized or well thought out. the plots aren’t in lines or rows or even all facing the same way.

you walk through all of this until you get to an open lawn (sans buried people) where you spread out your blankets and sheets and goods in front of the projected screen. you are there with lots of people. lots and lots. and everyone is all smushed against each other but not really because you have plenty of room to lie down and be amongst your own things and own people while just beyond your personal space there are lots of other people and their things.

also you bring plentyyyy of food and anything you want. people go all out and you can spot the pros with their expert set ups. low tables with candle lighting, red wagons with DIY built up sides so they can hold more loot, elaborate multi-course meals…

as for our dinner, we had: popcorn and crackers and baguette and four different cheeses and salami and shrimp with cocktail sauce and carrots and yogurt covered raisins and strawberries and raspberries and marble fudge cake with homemade butter creme icing and tejava to drink!!!
(have i ever told you i love trader joes?)
